CÔTES DU RHÔNE
My journey to this vineyard, with a geographer mindset, is shown on this map. The impetuous River Rhône was four times as powerful back at the start of the Quaternary period, over two million years ago. In the eighteenth century, Cassini charted the wild and spirited course of the Rhône which had shaped the impressive terraces of pebbles for millennia.
This map thus illustrates a journey through space and time. It gives an idea of the link between land and water. I chose it as a label as it tells the tale of this terroir and its landscape, of the ties nurtured by the local communities with their river.
Nearly 80% 'Galets roulés' (rounded pebbles) sit on filtering sands and deep clay where the vines draw up coolness and moisture.
Twenty-year-old vines of Grenache (38%), Syrah (35%), Carignan (15%) with a hint of Marselan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault
Aging in tanks for 8 months. Cultivation of the vineyard and the wine-making process are Organic and Demeter certified, officially as of the 2022 vintage.
This cool oasis is blessed by an early morning mist owing to the nearby confluence of the Rhône and Gardon rivers. It is also well aired by the cold, dry northerly wind, the Mistral, which keeps it healthy.
Balance is the key in this wine, which is vibrant and silky. Velvety mid-palate on a remarkable mineral mouthfeel overall.
A platter of cured pork meats, guineafowl with olives, braised pork pluma, pan-fried chanterelles or goat's cheese and zucchini tart for example.
